Practical Nursing Courses

PN 101 Anatomy & Physiology

Prerequisites:
GED, HSD

The purpose of this course is to introduce basic human anatomy and physiology in preparation for a career in practical nursing. Emphasis is placed on developing an understanding of normal human anatomy and physiology with basic principles of medical terminology, biology, chemistry, and microbiology also integrated throughout the course.

PN 102 Fundamental of Nursing

Prerequisites:

This course introduces the nursing roles of a practical nurse in health care settings. Emphasis is placed on the knowledge and skills needed to provide safe, quality care. The theoretical foundation for basic data collection and nursing skills is presented, and the student is given an opportunity to demonstrate these skills in laboratory and clinical settings. An introduction to the nursing process provides the student with a beginning framework for critical thinking, clinical decision-making, and clinical judgment.

PN 103 Pharmacology of Nursing

The purpose of this course is to examine pharmacotherapeutic agents used in the treatment of illness and the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of wellness in diverse individuals. It focuses on drug classification, concepts, and principles of pharmacology, with special consideration for the nursing role in developing a comprehensive approach to the clinical application of drug therapy using the nursing process. Nursing implications relative to the utilization of drug therapy are examined. The safety and legal implications of drug administration are discussed. Lab and clinical experiences provide the student with an opportunity to apply theoretical concepts and practice safe medication administration.

PN 104 Nutrition & Diet

This course will provide an overview of basic nutrition, nutritional needs across the lifespan, cultural and social aspects of nutrition, and therapeutic diets related to specific disorders. This course will also incorporate nursing goals and interventions related to nutrition to care for clients with acute and chronic health disorders.

PN 105 Gerontology

PN 106 Medical-Surgical Nursing I

This course focuses on the care of adult patients with health alterations that require medical and/or surgical intervention. Emphasis is placed on the care of patients with alterations in selected body functions. Profession-related concepts are emphasized throughout the course and beginning concept connections are made in the development of critical thinking and clinical judgment. Lab and clinical experiences provide the student with an opportunity to apply theoretical concepts and implement safe patient care to adults in select settings.

PN 107 Mental Health Nursing

This course introduces the care of patients across the lifespan facing psychological and emotional stressors. Emphasis is placed on common mental health disorders. Clinical and simulation experiences allow students to develop caring relationships, and use therapeutic communication, collaboration, data collection, and developmentally appropriate interventions as they provide patient-centered care.

PN 108 Medical-Surgical Nursing II

This course focuses on the care of adult patients with health alterations that require medical and/or surgical intervention. Emphasis is placed on the care of patients with alterations in selected body functions. The connection of profession-related concepts for the application of clinical judgment within the role of the vocational nurse is emphasized. Clinical experiences provide the student with an opportunity to apply theoretical concepts and implement safe patient care for adults in a variety of settings.

PN 109 Maternal - Newborn Nursing

This course provides an integrative, family-centered approach to the care of childbearing women and newborns. Emphasis is placed on normal pregnancies, growth and development, and common pediatrics.

PN 111 Leadership & Management

This course facilitates the transition of the student to the role of the practical nurse. Emphasis is placed on issues related to the nursing profession and healthcare. Concepts related to clinical judgment, leadership, delegation, and management are presented, as well as those that promote new graduate wellness and resilience. Standards of practice and the importance of practicing according to state regulations and statutes are examined.
